How to Design a 3D‑Printable Name Tag

A name tag is the perfect first 3D print: it is quick, useful, and teaches you shapes, 3D text and exporting. Here is how to make one from scratch in Model3DPrint — free and entirely in your browser.

Open the editor and follow along

Step‑by‑step

  1. Open the editorGo to Model3DPrint and start a new design. No download or account is needed.
  2. Add a base plateFrom the shape library add a rounded box (or a box, then round its corners). Set it to roughly 80 × 25 × 3 mm using the dimension sliders — a good size for a badge.
  3. Add your name as 3D textUse the 3D text tool, type the name, and pick a clear font. Set the depth to about 1.5–2 mm so the letters sit proudly on the plate.
  4. Position the text on the plateCenter the text on the base and drop it onto the surface so the bottom of the letters meets the top of the plate.
  5. Join text and baseSelect both and use Join (or Union) so the name tag becomes one solid, printable object.
  6. Add a hole for a lanyard (optional)Place a small cylinder near one edge, mark it as a hole, and combine to cut a clean loop for a clip or lanyard.
  7. Export your STLExport the design as an STL file, then open it in your slicer. A 0.2 mm layer height and 15% infill prints cleanly.

Pro tip

Print the plate in one color and the raised letters in another by pausing the print at the layer where the text starts — an easy two‑color effect with a single extruder.
